I always feel like I'm going into hugs wrong. Like should my arms be high? Low? One in each direction? Which one should be up and which one down?

The “safe” hug is high, contact inches below the shoulders, right hand high. You can use cues to modify from there.

Combine this with the euro custom of cheek kisses and the fact that euros know american's don't do this when greeting/leaving and sometimes don't, and prepare for maximum awkwardness.
