UAAS: Day 12 - Crescent City, California, to Orick, California
Time spent moving
Today was a waste of day, completely by accident. The place I decided to camp -- Gold Beach by the Redwood National Forest -- turns out to be completely far away from the place I wanted to go today -- Avenue of the Giants by the Humbolt State Park. I don't know why I didn't check the distance beforehand. So I tried to make the best of it and look at stuff in the Redwood Forest, except that even after checking out all the recommended sites, I still remained unimpressed. I spent a couple hours in the Palm Cafe in Orick, California, instead. Orick is supposed to be the "big town" near the Redwood National Forest. It has 300 people and no gas station, save a woman who has a drum of gas that she'll sell you gas from, last certified in 2007. (Suffice it to say, I bought gas from her.)
So to sum it up: I travelled hardly any distance at all, didn't get to see what I wanted to see, the beach I am camping on is cold, and me and my bike are covered in dead bugs, dirt, and now a thin layer of dust that won't come off, and today was totally a waste. But I did meet funny people in the cafe. (I like it when people I meet don't bother to give themselves names... it makes the conversation easier.)
Good thing I'm still a day ahead of schedule. Tomorrow will be Avenue of Giants, getting my oil changed and any other required maintenance in Eureka, and getting as close to San Francisco -- 330 miles away -- as I can. Oh well. It never really got above 60 today, and clouds have hung over the beach the entire time I've been at my camp site. Apparently this -- Fern Canyon, next to my campground -- is where they filmed a part of Jurrasic Park?
